NOW THE CARNATION QUESTION:
Why did he use “old school” carnations to teach with in the E-Z FLOWER DESIGN Guide?! First, ANY FLOWER CAN BE WONDERFULLY DESIGNED AND ATTRACTIVE if the designer has the knowledge and creativity to use them properly. Second, carnations by nature are an easily viewed flower in designs and enable the newcomer to become familiar with flowers as a separate entity and are also easily used with long stems or shorter stems, giving them much versatility in learning floral design. WHAT ABOUT THE LEATHER LEAF AND BABIES BREATH: OLD SCHOOL AGAIN?
Maybe so, but again these simple design elements are easy to work with, can be used in different ways (cut into smaller pieces, bunched for different effects, left “fluffy” ) and again are less expensive per unit to begin learning design. With their great adaptability, leather leaf and babies breath are great entities to begin your floral journey with. Substitution with other fillers can also be done to give your design any style.
I’ve taught some of the designs in my E-Z FLOWER DESIGN GUIDE in a simple, paper mache container. I am not pro or con with these items, and left them “naked” so one can easily see the mechanics of these items. Different plastic trays can be used as units to design in, and be placed in different kinds of containers (such as baskets) that don’t hold water. You need to use your creative common sense that you should never send or give anything where you can see the basic container, unless it’s decorative. Even if a plain mache or plastic container is used, always make sure your greenery or whatever covers the unit so it is not seen. So know that these lessons in my E-Z FLOWER DESIGN GUIDE are created to let you see how every thing is done, every step of the way. The same is true with the vases used.
